Dear Redeemer Family:
During this Covid-19 season God has taken several opportunities to speak to me through His beautiful creation, especially birds. Their joyful songs and graceful flight remind me that I am not to worry. God provides for their needs and Jesus says I am “of more value than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:31)
In late March Bob and I were having lunch on our back porch when I noticed a male and female cardinal sitting on our fence peering at the ground. They begin to take turns diving to the ground and flying back to the fence. It took us a few minutes to realize that a baby bird was among the leaves on the ground. We watched as the baby attempted to follow its parents up to the fence. He did not yet have the strength to soar. For over 30 minutes we watched as the parents took turns encouraging their child. Finally, after scores of tries the baby bird flew up and over our fence followed by its parents. We had just witnessed the importance of encouragement.
During this difficult season we can all benefit from encouragement. The apostle Paul advises the people of Thessalonica, “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11) Who can you encourage today- a child, a parent, a spouse, a neighbor, a pastor, a friend? We all need help to find the strength to soar. I encourage you to make time today to be an encouragement to someone else.
