The Start of the Lenten Season (Rector’s Letter for 2/15)

Dear Redeemer Family,
With the season of Epiphany behind us, we now enter into the season of Lent. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day season (not counting Sundays) which prepares us for the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter morning. I hope that you will participate in one of our three Ash Wednesday services.
One way you can participate in this Lenten season is to begin or continue a daily discipline of reading and reflecting on God’s Word.  As I said in my sermon yesterday, I challenge you to reflect on God the Father’s declaration from Mark 9:7, “This is my beloved son, listen to him.” Listening to Jesus will involve reading Scripture (Jesus is the living Word, John 1:1-5), reflecting on what you have read, and spending time in prayer (both talking to Jesus, and quietly listening for his voice). This does not limit your reading to the New Testament, since Jesus is the living Word, the culmination and fulfillment of God’s plan declared through the entirety of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) Are you listening to Jesus, daily? What is the Lord Jesus saying to you? Are you taking action on his word, or are you instead allowing your foundation to be built on sand (Luke 6:49)?
Join me this Lent, and together let’s strengthen our foundations so that they are firmly grounded on the Rock that is Jesus Christ (Luke 6:46-48).
Fr. Bill
P.S. Remember, that I will be teaching on Money, Stewardship, and Giving a week from Wednesday, Feb. 24, at 6:30PM (in-person and on Zoom). I hope that you make plans to join me and your Redeemer family.
