Lenten Week 1 Devotionals

Lenten Devotional Week 1

We have been invited, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent: by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and alms-giving; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word.
We begin our Lenten journey with a reflection on baptism.

Day 1:
What does my baptism mean to me?
What responsibilities does it bring about in my life?
Even if I feel alienated sometimes, what makes me return to these roots ofmy existence as a child of God?
Day 2:
Read Romans 6:1-4
What is the purpose of baptism?
What are some ways in which your life shows that you have died?
Day 3:
Read Colossians 3:1-10
What response is required of those who are baptized?
Where do you set your mind? How thoroughly have you put awaywhat is earthly in you?
Day 4:
Read Colossians 3:12-17
What should characterize those who have been baptized?
Are these things true of you?
Day 5:
Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-13, Galatians 3:27-28, Ephesians 4:4-6, Colossians 3:11
What does baptism bring about in the Church?
What distinctions might you need to put aside for the sake of unity?
Day 6:
Have your answers to these questions changed after reflecting on the Scriptures? What does my baptism mean to me?
What responsibilities does it bring about in my life?
Even if I feel alienated sometimes, what makes me return to these roots ofmy existence as a child of God?

[Theme and questions drawn from “15 days of prayer with Saint Vincent de Paul” by Jean-Pierre Renouard, New City Press, 2010.]
