Lenten Devotional Week 3

Lenten Devotional Week 3

Lenten Devotional Week 3

We have been invited, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent: by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and alms-giving; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word.
We have considered what it means to be baptized into the Body of Christ and how prayer is essential to maintaining our life of faith. We now begin to examine what that life should look like, both inwardly and outwardly.

Day 1
Where is the passion in my life? Do I have any passion for the things of God?
If so, how far do I invest my time and interest?
Can others who know of my faith see the difference it makes in my life?
Day 2:
Read:
Matthew 6:9-13
What characterizes the kingdom of God, according to the Lord’s Prayer?
(look at all the verses, not just verse 10)How earnestly do you long for God’s kingdom to show in your life?
Day 3:
Read:
Matthew 6:31-33
Luke 6:24-26
What priority should you give the kingdom in your life? What does Jesus say will keep you from being able to do that?
How much of your energy is given to seeking after those things that unbelievers seek?
Does having those things work to your benefit from a kingdom perspective?
Day 4:
Read:
Ephesians 2:10
Titus 2:11-14
What did God have in mind when he called you to himself and accomplished salvation for you through the cross of Jesus Christ?
How is this different from a theology of salvation by works? How is it different from a ‘health & wealth’ theology?
Day 5:
Read:
Luke 4:16-21
Deuteronomy 15:7-11 and 26:12-13*
Matthew 25:37-40
What sorts of people are on God’s heart to care for?
Do you know of people like that in Jacksonville? Are they on your heart?
Are you actively praying for them? What are you doing to help them?
*Note: sojourner is variously translated stranger, foreigner, migrant
Day 6:
Have this week’s reading and reflection caused you to want to answer these questionsdifferently?
Where is the passion in my life? Do I have any passion for the things of God?If so, how far do I invest my time and interest?
Can others who know of my faith see the difference it makes in my life?
[Theme and questions drawn from “15 days of prayer with Saint Vincent de Paul” by Jean-Pierre Renouard, New City Press, 2010.]
